Local Attractions

The Dordogne is has a wealth of activities to offer...

Pre-history

Most of what science knows about cro-magnon man comes from the findings in this area (the Vezere valley is classified as a world heritage site).

There are over 200 sites in the Perigord and many are open to visitors. Most of them have activities that suit children as well as adults.

Middle Ages

The Perigord region was divided in two until the end of the Middle Ages - by the English and French during the hundred years war and also religiously between the catholics and protestants. As a result the whole region is full of fortified castles and churches.

Many of the local Bastide Towns host 'Fêtes Médiéval' with jousting, period arts and crafts, activities for the children and (of course) medieval banquets.

These are usually held in August.

Food and Wine

This part of the Dordogne is on the eastern edge of the massive wine growing region that stretches all the way from Bordeaux. Wine here is cheap and plentiful, and you could spend weeks touring the wine Chateaux.

As most people know food is a French national obsession, and nowhere is this more obvious than in the Dordogne. The region specialises in truffles, foie gras and walnuts - all of which, and more, can be sampled in the hundreds of local restaurants where you can dine for extraordinary value.

One of our favourite activities during the summer is visiting the 'Marchés nocturnes'; most of the local villages turn over the village squares to trestle tables and invite local food and wine sellers to offer their wares direct to the public. They also lay on the entertainment while you eat and drink as the sun goes down.
